OU Professor Of Nursing Retires
Ada Hawkins, former director of the University of Oklahoma College of Nursing, has retired after 21 years on the
nursing faculty.
Miss Hawkins served as director of the nursing college
from 1951 to 1960, when the position of dean was created.
She remained at the college as professor of nursing.
, She was named professor emeritus by the OU Board of
J Regents on July 13, the first nurse in Oklahoma to retire
/ with that title. *
Her professional experience in nursing education includes
positions in schools of nursing in Ohio, Illinois and' Michigan'
before going to OU.
She is listed in "Who's Who in America" and "Who's
Who Among American Women." Miss Hawkins holds memberships in several professional fraternities and is a member of Phi Beta Kappa, national honor society.
She is active in the American Nurses' Association and the
National''League for Nursing and has held local, state and
• national offices in those organizations.
In 1965 Miss Hawkins served as visiting research associate at the Institute of Research and Science in Nursing Education, Teachers College, Columbia University, New York
City. She worked with four other professionals in nursing
education, studying improvements in nursing practice.
She received a nursing diploma from OU in 1928, a bachelor's from OU in 1932 and a master's from the University of
Chicago in 1950.
